Dispelling Myths: Navigating Therapy for Mental Well-Being and Why Therapy is for Everyone

The topic of therapy can be an interesting topic of conversation. Many people hold strong feelings regarding this topic and sometimes they can misunderstand what is therapy.

There are many myths we could talk about but here are a few of the common ones, courtesy of Web MD:

  • Therapy Is for Crazy People

  • You'll Be in Therapy Forever

  • All Therapy Is the Same

  • All Therapists Are the Same

Though mental health is discussed widely, there is still a prevailing stigma that overshadows it. “Therapy is for crazy people” just means that I am not the type of person in need. “Crazy people” being identified as outsiders or not normal who can’t handle life. Therapy is for everyone. Initially, therapy was for people suffering from mental illness but it can be a tool that helps prevent major mental breakdown.

Navigating Therapy: Your Emotional Health Checkup

My usual explanation goes like this: when something is bothering you physically, you go to the doctor. You don’t have to be dying but most people will go to the doctor if something “does not feel right.” While in your appointment, the doctor will ask pointed questions to get to the root of what is happening with you. They may ask about your diet, exercise, and stress levels to gauge if these areas are playing a part in how you are feeling. They come up with their diagnosis and give you suggestions on how to alleviate your symptoms and changes you can make to live a better life. This is the same for therapy though the focus is on your emotional and mental health.

Therapy is that checkup you need when emotionally or mentally things feel out of whack. The therapist is going to give you suggestions to help improve your life. A diagnosis doesn’t mean something serious but could be something like “Adjustment Disorder” which is a clinical way of saying that life is hard and adjustments are stressing you out. Once you start feeling better, you can move on and be done. Therapy does not have to last forever.

Just like doctors, therapists are all different, and you must find the one that makes you feel most comfortable. Many people will try out a few different doctors to find which one works for them, and that is not different than finding a therapist. You need to feel comfortable with the person you are talking to as well as the way they work with you. Just like some doctors specialize in different types of medicine, therapists can specialize in different techniques to help you feel better. Some techniques are better suited for what you need, and you can always ask a therapist if they have any specializations as well.

Overall, therapy is for everyone. Here were just a few of the misconceptions that you may hear about it and mental health counseling in general.  We will be diving deeper into the idea of therapy over the next few blog posts and better understand all aspects of this thing called mental health.
